Wasim Jaffer, former India opener, has made a huge remark while discussing the much-talked-about exit of Ajit Agarkar as the chief selector of the BCCI selection panel. Reportedly, Ajit Agarkar has not sought an extension to his tenure, as his contract ends on October 4, 2026.
According to sources, the reason behind this decision is the conflict between the BCCI and this body concerning the management of senior players. The committee led by Agarkar wanted the shift wherein Rohit Sharma would be relieved of ODI captaincy while the responsibility would be handed to Shubman Gill.
Later reports suggested that the committee also decided to leave Rohit behind. However, BCCI backed Rohit and denied any retirement speculations.
According to Wasim Jaffer, uniformity of thought was critical, and an individual’s point of view could not dominate the rest. Though appreciating the progressive outlook of Ajit Agarkar, he stressed the importance of maintaining equilibrium, especially in the case of senior cricketers.
"It is important for everyone to be on the same page. When one individual's opinion becomes stronger, then it is a problem, be it the head coach, captain, or chairman of the selectors. Somewhere, you need to balance it out. Our Indian public is also emotional about big players. They get very sentimental.
I am sure Agarkar would have a thought process for the betterment. But you need to balance these things out with the captain, coach, and everyone. You feel that if things are not going as per your opinion, it is better to move away. Maybe it was that. But these are speculations," Jaffer said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Wasim Jaffer also opined that certain decisions, like Rohit Sharma’s future in the team and Suryakumar Yadav’s removal as India captain after the T20 World Cup 2026 win, could’ve been handled better.
"In Rohit's case, if he is playing, he will have eyes on the 2027 World Cup, and you need that experience. I said this again in Surya's case as well. You removed him right after the World Cup. These things could have been handled better. Even Shami's case. He still has to prove himself. This is saddening," Wasim Jaffer reflected.
Wasim Jaffer also shared his thoughts on India pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami. He also said that he was excited to see whether Shami would make his India comeback for the upcoming New Zealand Tests.
Jaffer also stated that the likes of Shami and Bhuvneshwar not being recalled despite performing well was a sad state of affairs.
"I am excited to look at the New Zealand series. I am hopeful for Shami. If he is not picked there, it is clear that selectors are looking beyond him. Even Bhuvi's case is saddening. It feels bad when someone is performing, has good fitness, and the numbers are there. I have gone through these things, so I understand how it feels," he said.
Jaffer added that Bhuvneshwar should’ve had a better and longer career for India in white-ball cricket and particularly in T20Is. He has played 121 ODIs and 87 T20Is, having made his India debut in 2012.
"Bhuvi should have played more. Test cricket, he had injury issues, yes. There, the workload is more. He may not have been able to handle it, but for sure, in white-ball and especially T20, his career should have been longer," Wasim Jaffer added.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar played a huge role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) two IPL wins in 2025 and 2026, taking a total of 45 wickets across two seasons.
