Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has proposed a major restructuring of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Instead of limiting the three-member committee strictly to hiring national coaches and selectors, Gavaskar believes the CAC should actively oversee domestic and international fixtures, structural overhauls, and the broader health of Indian cricket.

He suggested leveraging the immense tactical expertise of icon players by bringing the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Ravi Shastri, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag into an expanded CAC panel.

By empowering a heavily experienced CAC, Gavaskar argued that the BCCI can fix scheduling conflicts, counter the mindset of settling for draw-centric results, and ultimately strengthen India’s pipeline for top-tier Test cricketers.

"There are no longer any committees in BCCI today apart from the selection committees and the CAC. Perhaps the time has come to expand the CAC and its brief of selecting the selectors and coach, and also look at fixtures — domestic and international, and all things related to Indian cricket. There are some incredibly experienced former cricketers whose expertise can be utilised to be on this committee," Gavaskar wrote in his column for the Mid-Day.

"How about names like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Ravi Shastri, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag — to name a few? The President and Secretary will be there too," he added.

Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik are currently part of the Cricket Advisory Committee. Since their appointment in 2022, this trio conducted interviews to pick crucial leadership roles, including appointing Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of the senior men's selection committee

Gavaskar noted that when greats like Tendulkar and Dravid interact directly with the national team's head coach and the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), it would carry a different heft altogether. Crucially, he urged the BCCI to establish an identical, high-powered advisory committee for women's cricket as well.

"When this committee interacts with the coach and captain and the head of the NCA, it carries a heft beyond measure. A similar committee for women’s cricket, too, where experience and expertise meet to take calls to take Indian cricket forward," Gavaskar remarked.

"Just thinking about this gives one the goosebumps. Will it ever happen, or is it just a dream?" he concluded.
