The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are navigating a critical junction regarding his contract renewal, which officially expires on October 4, 2026.
Despite recent rumors of friction, a report published by Sportstar claims that both sides are actively working toward sorting out their differences.
According to the report, Agarkar will sit down with some BCCI officials over the next 48 hours to discuss a ‘roadmap’ for his extension.
“Both parties were positively looking at extension and hoped that a few teething issues could be sorted out at the earliest,” the publication quoted a BCCI functionary as saying.
Under BCCI regulations, a member can serve a maximum of four consecutive years on a senior selection committee. Having taken the helm in July 2023, Agarkar remains fully eligible for this remaining one-year term.
Ajit Agarkar's position came under scrutiny after the July 2026 ODI series against England, where Rohit Sharma's future in ODI cricket and leaked retirement timelines left a section of BCCI officials furious.
Rumours surfaced during the England tour that the selection committee had discussed dropping Rohit from future ODI assignments and that the Lord's match would be his last. After the veteran opener slammed a century in that game, the narrative backfired, prompting BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia to issue a public statement confirming Sharma's long-term spot in the team.
For now, Agarkar continues to occupy the chairman of selectors post. However, the upcoming meeting with the BCCI top brass could determine whether he continues to hold the role or the board opts for a change.
If he doesn’t get extension, the board will need a replacement just a year before the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
Agarkar’s tenure has brought immense white-ball success to the Indian team, including three ICC titles (2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and 2025 Champions Trophy) and two Asia Cups.
While limited-overs results have been historic, the team’s graph has gone down considerably in the Test format, suffering clean sweeps at the hands of New Zealand and South Africa in home series.
The Agarkar-led panel has also managed a major transition phase, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from Tests and T20Is, alongside red-ball exits for Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane.
