Weeks after he was chosen for India's Under-19 team for the forthcoming series against Australia, Bengal leg-spinner Rohit Yadav was given a two-year suspension by the BCCI for allegedly lying about his age.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Rohit played for India U19 in the July tour of Sri Lanka, when he helped the team win the last Test by taking six wickets.

"He has been banned for two years," said a BCCI source to PTI.

Additionally, Rohit was slated to participate in India's U-19 team's home one-day and multi-day matches against the visiting Australia U-19 team in Rajkot and Ahmedabad later this month.

When his paperwork was examined in Sri Lanka, the age discrepancy was discovered. Rohit is ineligible to play age-group cricket since his three birth certificates show various years of birth: 2007, 2009, and 2010.

His Aadhaar data also contained inconsistencies. His birth year was listed as 2007 when he registered with the Cricket Association of Bengal. His Aadhaar data were later updated to reflect 2006 in 2017 and 2020, then to 2009 in 2021.

Due to the disparities, the CAB had previously excluded Rohit from its junior teams and notified the BCCI. The Board has now notified all associated state associations and prohibited him from playing domestic cricket for a period of two years.

Rohit Yadav is one of 62 players who have been deemed ineligible for registration or transfer for any tournament during the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons by the CAB over documentation and age-related discrepancies.

Ravi Kumar, an India U19 World Cup winner, and Vishal Bhatti, a left-arm spin all-rounder with three first-class and two List A appearances, are also on the list. A 45-month age difference in CAB records has drawn attention to Ravi, a crucial member of India's 2022 Under-19 World Cup-winning squad.

The action is part of the association's wider scrutiny of player documentation and age records, which have been uploaded to its website.
