Team India’s upcoming tour of Bangladesh is currently in limbo with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set to approach the central government for final approval.
Speaking to India Today, a top BCCI source confirmed the board cannot independently approve the tour and must await clearance from the Government of India due to ongoing political and security sensitivities.
"We are working on it and will seek permission and clarity as far as the Bangladesh tour is concerned. We can't take any decision on our own at this stage. No decision has been taken yet, but we will soon approach the government," the source said.
The source also confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally written to the BCCI to seek confirmation and the two boards remain in constant touch over the bilateral series.
"The BCB has written to us and they are in constant touch with us. Soon there will be more clarity," the source added.
The BCB has reserved a window from August 29 to September 15 for the proposed white-ball series against India. The thee ODIs are scheduled for September 1, 3 and 6, followed by as many T20Is on September 9, 12 and 13, while the Indian team’s arrival in Bangladesh is tentatively planned for August 28.
Originally scheduled for August 2025, India’s tour of Bangladesh was postponed to September 2026 following diplomatic tensions between two nations.
Earlier this year, the relations hit rock bottom after IPL franchise KKR release Mustafizur Rahman from their roster on BCCI’s instructions while Bangladesh refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026 citing security concerns.
The proposed series therefore became an important test for the cricketing relations between the neighbours. While Bangladesh is actively leveraging sports diplomacy and communicating through the Indian Embassy to rebuild ties, the made it clear has clarified that it cannot finalize the tour independently.
If the Indian government denies clearance, the BCCI is already exploring alternative plans to host a short white-ball series against Afghanistan in Delhi during the exact same window.
