Newly-appointed England men's Test head coach Stephen Fleming has reportedly approached former Australia and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Michael Hussey to join his international support staff as batting coach.

This move comes immediately after Fleming ended his legendary 18-year association with CSK to replace Brendon McCullum in the England red-ball setup.

According to 7Cricket, Fleming has informally approached Hussey to gauge his interest in joining the England coaching staff as the red-ball batting coach.

While Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach for the three-match home series against Pakistan starting August 19, his permanent spot as the lead batting coach is no longer guaranteed.

Hussey has previously served England as a consultant under Matthew Mott when the Three Lions clinched the T20 World Cup 2022 title in Australia.

"The first time I pulled on the England shirt it was a little bit strange but after that you get to work with the players, enjoy developing those individual relationships, and forget about what you’re wearing," Hussey had said back then.

The report clarified that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has not yet extended an official contract to Hussey, who remains Fleming’s preferred choice for the batting coach role.

If Hussey accepts, it would reunite a 15-year partnership. The duo played together for CSK in the inaugural 2008 IPL season before working closely as head coach and batting coach for the franchise.

Stephen Fleming will officially take over the reins ahead of England's winter tour of South Africa in December 2026.
