Out-of-favor India pacer Mohammad Shami is seemingly not in the plans for the Indian team anymore. The most amazing bowler of the ICC World Cup 2023 is not even in contention for the 2027 World Cup tournament. In March 2025, Shami last participated in an ODI. In 2023, he last participated in a Test match.

Even though Shami has been playing quite consistently in domestic cricket, it appears like a call-up to the Indian side is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Shami was recently asked to choose his favorite coach. Shami had made his India Test debut in 2013 under Duncan Fletcher but flourished under the reigns of Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri.

"It's a bit difficult to compare... I haven't played much under Gauti bhai. I've spent a good amount of time with Rahul bhai and Anil bhai. But if I have to choose one out of these four, I would choose Ravi bhai. Because of that freedom... that aggression you see in a player when they go out to fight and play a match, you can see that from the outside [with his coaching]," Shami told Times Now Navbharat.

Shami had been excellent for India in the 2023 World Cup, taking 24 wickets despite missing a handful of matches earlier. He also achieved the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler during the tournament, taking 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final of the tournament.

However, the Indian team lost the opportunity to win the trophy as Australia defeated them in the final in a one-sided contest in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023.

"This thing is printed in my mind like a picture because there is only one regret in my mind: that we should have won the final; that's it. These [records] don't matter to me at all. But yes, sometimes I feel that when I look at the whole picture of the World Cups, or sometimes when a reel or a list comes up in front of me showing 'he played this many matches and took this many wickets,' then the matches I missed in ICC events come to my mind.

That picture is always in my mind: that, man, I missed three, four, or five matches every year in every event... if you look at the World Cup. So, I was thinking, man, if I had played these, I would be sitting right at the very top. Sometimes it just feels like that," Shami said.

Shami has been named in the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2026-27 tournament.
