Former international umpire Anil Chaudhary recently shared insights regarding the iconic 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) altercation between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir.
Speaking on JioStar, Chaudhary said he fully anticipated a spat because both players hail from Delhi. He explained that players from the North thrive on high intensity and their peak performances do not come out without that competitive edge.
While supporting on-field intensity, Chaudhary emphasized that players must remember a fine line exists and it should never be crossed.
“I knew something like that would happen because all of them from the North play with aggression. I have played local cricket too, and our players have always played like this,” Chaudhary stated.
“If they don’t play with that aggression, their performances won’t come out as well. The flavour of the game won’t be there if you put too many restrictions on the players. But there’s a limit, and it shouldn’t be crossed,” he added.
Notably, Kohli and Gambhir were also involved in a heated exchange during the IPL 2023 season. It all happened after Kohli engaged in an ugly spat with Naveen-ul-Haq in a match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Lucknow.
After the game, Gambhir, who was serving as LSG mentor at the time, was seen approaching Kohli aggressively with his players and the two had an animated chat. Before the matter could have gone out of hand, both of them were separated by the players and support staff members.
The public relationship between Kohli and Gambhir has evolved significantly from past on-field tensions to a professional working dynamic, especially since the latter was appointed India’s head coach two years ago.
Meanwhile, Chaudhary defended Virat Kohli's on-field aggression, noting that his fiery personality lacks personal malice and brings essential energy to cricket.
“Actually, my advantage with Virat was that I had officiated his matches since childhood, so I have known him for a long time. He doesn’t have any malice,” Chaudhary said.
“He reacts aggressively sometimes, but if you’re right, he’ll give you a thumbs up too. Between overs, he’ll come over and put a hand around your waist. But he is lively throughout. Players like him should be there, otherwise, the game will get boring,” he remarked.
