Everyone knows what kind of relationship former India captain Sourav Ganguly shared with ex-Australia captain and former India head coach Greg Chappell. A well-known incident in Indian cricket is their falling out during Chappell's time as head coach of India in the mid-2000s, when Ganguly was cut from the team.
But Ganguly has now revealed something more astounding. Speaking on a podcast, Ganguly said that in 2011, Chappell sent him an email indicating his interest in coaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
"He (Chappell) had emailed me in 2011, when I was KKR captain. I was checking my mail one morning at my home in England. I saw his mail and thought, 'Am I still sleeping?' Then I checked it properly, checked the name, and checked the ID, because a lot of fake emails come. He wanted to coach KKR. With me as captain!" Ganguly revealed on the AddaGB podcast.
Ganguly then joked about the reaction of the people upon hearing the revelation.
"(People) must be thinking that Dada couldn't be that big of a fool. He might have been a fool once, but surely, he couldn't be fooled again,” Ganguly added.
However, Sourav Ganguly was let go by KKR before the IPL 2011 auction, and he was bought by Pune Warriors India, for whom he played for two seasons in 2011 and 2012. KKR began a new chapter in their history, with Gautam Gambhir being bought in the auction and named captain.
In the 2000s, Ganguly went through a turbulent time with Australian instructors. He was removed from the Indian squad by Chappell, but in 2009, under John Buchanan's leadership, he was also fired as KKR captain.
Ganguly further reflected on his relationship with Chappell, stating that he does not answer his messages.
"I don't answer him. I don't answer people who are not honest," he stated.
