England head coach Brendon McCullum has firmly denied any rift with captain Ben Stokes, describing him as a "good friend" and dismissing media speculation as unfounded. The rumours intensified during the ongoing three-match Test series against New Zealand, which currently stands at 1-1.
Following England's 115-run victory in the opening Test at Lord's, Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson breached the team's newly established midnight curfew at a London nightclub. They were reportedly nearby during an altercation where a member of England's security staff was struck by a rugby player.
Both players were handed one-match suspension by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and missed the second Test at The Oval, where England succumbed to a crushing 253-run defeat. They ultimately escaped severe formal punishment, receiving only a written warning for breaking contractual obligations after investigations cleared them of direct involvement in the nightclub violence.
Following the conclusion of a disciplinary hearing, Stokes and Atkinson have been cleared to return for the third Test, slated to begin on June 25 at Trent Bridge.
Speaking to the media on the eve of the third Test, McCullum dismissed reports that his relationship with Stokes had become strained. The coach revealed that he addressed the speculation directly when Stokes rejoined the squad on Tuesday (June 23).
"I said: 'Do you know where this has come from, the conversations around our relationship over the last six months?'" McCullum told reporters.
"He said: 'No, I have no idea.' I said to him: 'As far as I'm concerned, I consider you a good friend.'"
McCullum emphasized that they share the same vision for English cricket, despite recent on-field setbacks and off-field disciplinary investigations.
"Obviously we've been through a lot together as a working pair in leadership positions here in English cricket," McCullum said. "In the end, we both want what's right and what is the best for English cricket."
Former New Zealand captain took charge as head coach of the England men's Test team in 2022. Along with Stokes, he revolutionized red-ball cricket through an aggressive, positive style known as "Bazball".
"It's been a real privilege for me over the past four years to work in intimate detail and as a partnership alongside Ben," McCullum stated. "I look back on that fondly, about how tight we were as a group and how tight we were as a pair. Anything outside of that, it's not really up to us. Ben and I are tight."
