Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel finds himself embroiled in a controversy after a police complaint was filed against him by a woman, who alleged that he engaged in a sexual relationship under the false promise of marriage and subjected her to assault and criminal intimidation.
Porel, who was part of India’s 2022 Men's Under-19 World Cup-winning team, has vehemently refuted the claims.
The complaint was lodged by the woman and her mother at the Mogra Police Station in Hooghly district on Tuesday (June 23), following which police said they have started probing the matter, PTI reported.
According to the report, the woman accused in the complaint that she and Porel had been in a relationship for the last three years and differences emerged last year, after which the cricketer allegedly started "distancing" himself from her.
She further claimed that Porel had promised to tie the marriage knot with her but is now refusing to do so.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that Porel had sexual intercourse with her under the pretext of marriage and also accused him of assault and criminal intimidation.
"We have received a complaint and started an investigation," a police official told the news agency.
Porel rubbished the allegations, calling them false. He also stated that the police haven’t yet reached out to him.
"I am playing well now, so various things are coming up," Porel was quoted as saying in the media. "I will talk about this when the police investigate. I have not spoken to the police yet."
Abishek Porel was signed by the Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2023 season. He had a breakout season in 2024, scoring 327 runs. He was retained by the Capitals for INR 4 crore for the 2026 season.
Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season. Across his career, he has played 32 first-class matches and 23 List A (one-day) matches so far.
