India A opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi tore apart the Sri Lanka A bowling attack in the final of the tri-nation A series at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday (June 21).
Ahead of the title clash, the 15-year-old was struggling for big runs and had registered modest scores of 14, 44, 21 and 38 in this series. He was also under scrutiny for his physical altercation with a Sri Lanka A player during the round-robin stage.
However, the teenager produced his best when it matted the most. Sooryavanshi opened his account with a boundary in the big final and didn’t look back. He smashed the fastest half-century in List A cricket history, reaching the milestone in just 11 balls.
Eyeing the fastest-ever List A century, Sooryavanshi was eventually dismissed for 94 off 29 balls by Sahan Arachchige, but the southpaw set the tone for India A's innings to completely dominate early on. His whirlwind knock featured 10 fours and 8 sixes.
At the time of Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, India A’s score was 132/1 after 8.5 overs. Soon after his dismissal, the other opener Priyansh Arya also perished for 39 off 29 balls.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and skipper Tilak Varma are currently steadying the India A innings after Sri Lanka A won the toss and elected to field first.
