Senior Sri Lankan cricketers who have interacted with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi through the IPL have reached out to the Indian batting prodigy, expressing regret over Monday’s (June 15) post-match altercation with Sri Lanka A players, Cricbuzz reported.
The incident in Dambulla involved fiery exchanges and a near-physical confrontation after a tense Super Over finish in the Tri-Nation A series.
The tension boiled over after Sri Lanka A successfully defended 17 runs in the Super Over. As Sooryavanshi was walking back to the pavilion, Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage reportedly provoked the 15-year-old by saying, "Go home, this is not the IPL".
This prompted the India A opener to charge back, leading to a shoving match that required intervention from senior players like Niroshan Dickwella to defuse the situation.
According to the report, Halambage had been targeting Sooryavanshi since the first game of the tournament and sledged him in the second game on Monday Morning when India A batted.
Earlier, it was reported by Cricbuzz that some members of the Sri Lanka A team felt their camp owed an apology to the Indian side. However, it remains unclear whether such an apology has been conveyed.
Coming to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, he is navigating the challenging shift from the explosive 20-over format to 50-over cricket, posting modest scores of 14, 44, and 21 in ongoing Tri-Nation A series.
Sooryavanshi will be back in action on June 17 for India A's final league match against Afghanistan A. The Tilak Varma-led will have to win the game by a handsome margin to keep the final dream alive.
