BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar expanded on the reasons why Shreyas Iyer was named the new India T20I captain. This announcement was made on June 6, 2026, as BCCI revealed the India T20I squads for the UK tour and the 2026 Asian Games.
In a huge development, BCCI sacked Suryakumar Yadav as captain of the India T20I team and removed him from the squad as well, while naming Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain, with Tilak Varma as his deputy.
The selectors not only gave Iyer the leadership position but also left Surya out of all three of the T20I teams that were revealed on Saturday, indicating a definite change in course ahead of the upcoming global cycle.
One of the most important conclusions from the BCCI's selection meeting was the decision. The leadership shift signaled the start of a new phase for India's shortest-format team, even though the selection of teenage wonder Vaibhav Sooryavanshi attracted a lot of attention.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selectors, stated that Iyer had made a strong case for the position with his track record of leadership and steady work over the previous several years.
“With regards to Shreyas, we have seen what he has done over the last few years. Leading different franchises, he won finals once and probably had a tougher season this year after a great start. So, we have seen everything that a captain possibly can.
His own performances have been really good. He was quite close to winning the World Cup squad as well. Obviously, Surya was still there. There was no room for him. He is, in my opinion, a standout candidate with enough experience now having played in the T20 format,” Agarkar said during the press conference.
Agarkar emphasized over and again that Iyer's appointment was not a reactionary choice, but rather one based on merit. Despite having performed well in franchise cricket, Iyer hadn't played a T20I in two and a half years before his promotion. Agarkar admitted that rivalry for spots had frequently worked against him.
“Like I said, Shreyas is a well-deserving captain. He was very close to always being on the team over the last couple of years. It’s just that Surya and the spots that he bats in were there, and he couldn’t find a spot. So, now that he’s found a spot, I think he’s earned it,” Agarkar stated.
