Former Punjab cricketer and ex-teammate of Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli, Amanpreet Singh Gill, passed away on May 6, 2026 at the age of 36. Amanpreet was a fast bowler and was also a part of the Kings XI Punjab (now PBKS) squad and the India U19 team.
Amanpreet Singh Gill, a right-arm medium-fast bowler and right-handed batsman born on September 16, 1989, passed away. The cricketer has represented both the India U19 team and the Punjab Domestic Cricket Team.
He was an incredibly skilled right-arm bowler who shared a dressing room with Saurabh Tiwary, Ravindra Jadeja, and Virat Kohli. With the exclusion of YTests and YODIs, Amanpreet Singh has only played six first-class games. In 2007, Gill represented India in five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test. He dismissed former Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera in the longer format.
He then participated for India in the U19 tri-series against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka alongside Virat Kohli. He starred with 3/19 in India's convincing victory in the competition final. However, Gill was left off the roster for the 2008 U19 World Cup in Malaysia, as the selectors preferred the likes of Ajitesh Argal and Pradeep Sangwan.
He managed to secure an IPL contract with the Kings XI Punjab (now known as the Punjab Kings) in 2009. He remained a member of the squad until the 2010 season, sharing the dressing room with outstanding players such as Yuvraj Singh, Mahela Jayawardene, and Brett Lee.
After retirement from the game, Gill was also part of Punjab's senior selection committee.
The Punjab Cricket Association identified him as a former Punjab cricketer and a member of the Senior Selection Committee, underlining his continued role in the state’s talent system after his own playing days.
Furthermore, Yuvraj Singh, who shared a dressing room with Amanpreet Singh, took to X to share condolences on his demise.
“Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Om Shanti,” Yuvraj posted on X.
In remembrance of Gill, Punjab Kings players wore black armbands during their IPL 2026 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His relationship with the Punjab cricket scene, where he had transitioned from player to selector, was evident in the gesture.
