The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has bowed to the pressure caused by the pressure of the players’ boycott and sacked director and finance committee chairman Nazmul Islam, reports stated.
This followed the cancellation of the first Bangladesh Premier League (BPL 2025-26) match on January 14 due to the teams' refusal to show up for the game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
On January 14, the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) announced that players would not take part in the BPL if Nazmul did not resign. He had also courted controversy by calling legend Tamim Iqbal an ‘Indian agent’ after he suggested cordial dialogue between the ICC, BCCI, and BCB over the T20 World Cup issue.
The controversy began when Nazmul dismissed worries about player compensation if Bangladesh withdrew from the T20 World Cup while repeating the country's unwillingness to travel to India. He declared that since the players had not yet proven their worth, they would not be paid.
"There will be no loss for the Bangladesh Cricket Board [if we don't take part in the World Cup], as the loss will be for the players. Up to 2027, our revenue will not be hampered because in the 2022 ICC financial meeting, this was already fixed. Future World Cups or future bilateral or international events may have relevance, for example, whether teams will come to us under the FTP. Those are valid questions. But this World Cup does not affect that,” Nazmul said, as per Cricbuzz.
"Why [should we compensate?] If they go somewhere and cannot do anything, then for the crores of taka we spend behind them, do we ask for that money back from them? Do we? Answer me," he said.
Now, as per Bangladesh news outlet, Prothom Alo, in response to demands from cricket players, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director M. Nazmul Islam was removed from his position on Thursday and relieved of all board duties, including his role as chairman of the finance committee. This decision was made by BCB on Thursday during an online emergency meeting.
