The renowned Australian batter Damien Martyn has woken up from a medically induced coma. Martyn's ex-Australian teammate, Adam Gilchrist, stated that the former right-handed batter is now able to speak, a day after Martyn's family gave an encouraging update regarding the member of Australia's 2003 ODI World Cup-winning squad.
Damien Martyn was diagnosed with Meningitis, which is an inflammation of protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and infection can cause harmful brain swelling. He was placed in a medically induced coma while doctors treated the dangerous disease.
According to Fox Sports, Gilchrist revealed to Code Sports that Martyn “is now able to talk and respond to treatment."
“He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out (of the coma), to the point where his family feels it’s like some sort of miracle. It has been so positive that they’re hopeful he will be able to move out of the ICU into another part of the hospital, which is representative of what a great recovery it’s been and how quickly it has flipped around,” Gilchrist told Code Sports as reported by Fox Sports on Sunday.
Gilchrist also revealed that he had spoken to Martyn’s partner, Amanda, right throughout the process of his recovery.
“Amanda just really wants to say to everyone she is convinced that the love, goodwill, and sense of care that they felt from everybody, via messages and via the coverage in the press, really helped him. They just feel blessed so many people have wanted to support him in his time of need," he said.
Gilchrist claims that despite Martyn's awakening from the coma, he would stay in the hospital to continue his treatment.
“He will remain in the hospital and continue to receive treatment, but the turnaround has been miraculous,” Gilchrist stated.
