Australia opener Travis Head has stated that he hopes players from his team and England will share a drink after the ongoing Ashes 2025-26 series winds up in Sydney and revive a tradition that fell by the wayside after the 2023 series.
Australia is leading the five-Test series 3-1, with the last Test scheduled in Sydney from January 4. Australia has also retained the Ashes urn after winning the series.
After the fifth Test of the 2023 Ashes series, England players and staff were unable to meet for drinks at The Oval due to protracted farewells.
Head, an Australian batter, expressed excitement for post-series drinks at the Sydney Cricket Ground and praised both teams for playing the game "in the right way".
“There’s definitely mutual respect. I get along with a couple of them really well. There are some really good relationships with both teams.
I’m looking forward to having a beer with Ducky (Ben Duckett). So, yeah, it’d be a nice moment. It’s obviously nice going there knowing that we’ve won the series,” Head told The Australian newspaper on Wednesday.
During the 2023 series, Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey's contentious run-out of Jonny Bairstow sparked a "spirit of cricket" debate.
England supporters attacked Australian players in the Long Room at Lord's, and England head coach Brendon McCullum told the BBC that he couldn't see his squad meeting the visitors for beers anytime soon.
After England won the last Test at The Oval by 49 runs, bringing the series to 2-2, McCullum changed his mind and stated that England would meet the Australians for beer.
