Herschelle Gibbs, a legendary South African cricketer, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to bash talented young South African batter Dewald Brevis.
Brevis played for Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 2026 match against two-time winners Sunrisers Eastern Cape on Monday, although he did not contribute to the team's victory under Keshav Maharaj. In fact, when Pretoria was required to chase down a 189-run target, Brevis only managed to score 12 runs from 5 balls coming into bat at No. 4.
He smacked a six and a four for the Capitals on the second and third balls of Lewis Gregory's eighth over in Gqeberha. On the fourth ball, however, Matthew Breetzke caught him close to the boundary ropes as Brevis attempted to hit another maximum.
After his dismissal, Herschelle Gibbs shared a post on X in which he stated that Brevis is not showing any signs of game management.
“Would love to know what the coaches are saying to this Brevis boy, his not showing any signs of game management even though he’s played plenty t20s already.." Gibbs posted on X.
Fans on the microblogging site were drawn to Gibbs' post. In response to a fan's comment that stated Brevis should learn from Gibbs’ own 175-run knock in 2005, Gibbs stated that the young right-handed batter should play more responsibly, but he doesn't give him that impression.
“More responsibility must come from him but he doesn’t give me the impression he wants that," Gibbs wrote.
Another fan posted that Brevis regularly scores between 30-40, but conceded that the young batter has to change his batting style at some point. Gibbs replied to the fan's message and stated, “Batting is about habits and that’s not a good sign for him.”
Brevis, who played a key role in MI Cape Town's first SA20 title victory earlier this year, is the most expensive player in SA20 2026. He was signed for R16.5 million (approx INR 8.30 crore) during the SA20 auction earlier this year.
