India's humiliating 191-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the U19 Asia Cup 2025 final seems to have drawn the ire of BCCI.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the board has sought a report from the team management and is expected to meet captain Ayush Mhatre and coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar in the coming days.
“The decision was taken at an online Apex Council meeting on Monday (December 22) evening, where members discussed the team's overall showing in the tournament and felt a review was needed,” the report stated.
While performance reviews are standard after major tournaments, the BCCI’s decision to hold discussions with the captain and the head coach is unusual.
The Indian U19 team, which had been undefeated until the final, was totally outclassed in the title clash at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai on Sunday (December 21).
Sameer Minhas’ blistering 172 off 113 balls powered Pakistan to a formidable total of 347/8 in 50 overs. The Boys in Blue got off to a flyer in their run chase thanks to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but the innings soon fell apart. Indian batters failed under the pressure of the final, and their innings eventually folded for 156 in 26.2 overs.
The final match also saw heated moments, with Mhatre and Sooryavanshi engaging in a verbal battle with their rivals from Pakistan. Whether player conduct will be part of the review is not yet known.
The BCCI’s step may be aimed at the upcoming U19 World Cup, scheduled for January-February 2026. The board seems keen to address any issues early and avoid setbacks in the global showpiece.
