England head coach Brendon McCullum shared his views on the recent airport altercation between team security and a cameraman and said that the situation was not ideal, but urged everyone to move on from the incident.
The incident happened at Brisbane Airport, with security confronting a Channel 7 camera operator. The broadcaster's footage shows the security guy shoving the camera operator away as he tries to get a close-up look at the players. The players had driven down from Noosa, where they had been taking a mid-series break.
A local journalist attempted a copycat stunt after the delegation landed in Adelaide, where the third test would start on Wednesday. Ben Stokes and managing director Rob Key quickly put an end to it before security intervened once more.
According to media guidelines issued by Cricket Australia (CA), teams can be videotaped "from a respectful distance" but are not available for interviews while in transit.
Since arriving in Australia, the tourists have come under intense scrutiny. They have occasionally been made fun of when down 2-0 in the series, and their aggressive style of play is failing.
"I didn't see [the airport incident], but obviously it wasn't ideal. But hopefully it's been dealt with, and everyone's able to move on. Obviously, we know coming to Australia, there are a lot of eyeballs, and there's a lot of intensity and scrutiny on everything we do. I feel like we've managed ourselves pretty well throughout this tour. I thought the boys were outstanding,” McCullum said on Sunday, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
"The last week we've had, they're engaging with a lot of the locals, and everyone was in good spirits. There was some good banter flying both ways, and I think everyone treated it [well] and respected it,” he added.
McCullum also justified England's choice to travel to Noosa, stating that the trip was planned well in advance due to the time gap between the Perth and Adelaide Tests.
"It was quite an important period. We could give ourselves a chance to allow some of the lessons we've learned over the last couple of weeks to settle and to recalibrate a little bit. I think now the freshness that we come into this Test match will hopefully pay off,” the England coach stated.
The third Test of the Ashes 2025-26 will be played in Adelaide from December 17 onwards.
