India's Shreyas Iyer suffered a critical spleen injury during the third One-Day International against Australia in Sydney. He sustained the injury while taking the catch of Travis Head and tumbled to the ground on his left side.
He was in immediate discomfort, and an Indian physio treated him on the field, but Iyer had to leave with him.
When he came into the dressing room, his condition deteriorated as his vital signs dropped, demanding immediate hospitalization. Subsequent medical scans revealed internal bleeding caused by a spleen laceration, so he was transferred to an ICU at a Sydney hospital.
According to the most current reports, the Indian batter's condition is stable, and he was transferred from the ICU on Tuesday.
Now, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has provided a crucial update on Shreyas’ injury and stated that the issue could've been 'touch and go', but the BCCI medical team promptly reacted and shifted him to a hospital.
"Shreyas is much, much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than the doctor expected. I'm in regular touch with Dr Rizwan (Khan, Indian team doctor who stayed back with Iyer to assist with his treatment at the Sydney hospital). Normally, he should take six to eight weeks (to recover completely), but you can expect a surprise from him because he may recover much earlier," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said as per The Times of India.
"The doctors are very satisfied with his progress. He has started his normal functioning (routine chores). His injury was very severe, but he has recovered and is out of danger, which is why he was shifted from the ICU to his room in the hospital yesterday," he added.
Saikia also rubbished the reports that Shreyas Iyer underwent surgery, and instead, another procedure was performed to save his life. The alternate approach allowed him to heal quickly, which would not have been possible with surgery.
"Shreyas didn't have surgery but went through a different procedure, which is why he recovered so quickly," Saikia added.
"He's talking, smiling, and already joking with the nurses," a TOI source added.
Shreyas Iyer is likely to be out of action for quite some time, and there are question marks on his availability for the South Africa series.
