A joyous victory for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025 turned tragic as a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in 11 people losing their lives and almost 50 getting injured.
The unfortunate episode unfolded on June 4 when passionate fans were attending the celebration event for the RCB team lifting their maiden IPL trophy.
Nearly three months after the incident, the defending IPL champions announced the launch of "RCB CARES", which is meant to deal with grievances and problems of their fans.
On Saturday (August 30), RCB unveiled the details of their new initiative to support families of 11 victims.
In a statement on X, the franchise wrote: “Our hearts broke on June 4, 2025. We lost eleven members of the RCB family. They were part of us. Part of what makes our city, our community & our team unique. Their absence will echo in the memories of each one of us. No amount of support can ever fill the space they've left behind. But as a first step, and with the deepest respect, RCB has extended Rs 25 lakh each to their families. Not just as financial aid, but as a promise of compassion, unity, and ongoing care. This is also the beginning of RCB CARES: a long-term commitment for meaningful action that begins by honouring their memory. Every step forward will reflect what the fans feel, expect, and deserve.”
A day after the stampede tragedy, RCB had also promised to give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the affected families.
The mishap not only took away lives but also hampered the reputation of Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. Earlier this month, the cabinet approved Justice John Michael D'Cunha's Commission verdict, which deemed the iconic venue "unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering".
Moreover, Mumbai has replaced Bengaluru as one of the five venues for next month's women's ODI World Cup.
