After Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was defeated by Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their IPL 2025 match in Delhi, this was the second time since IPL 2022, that CSK lost 10 games in one single season.

Captain MS Dhoni acknowledged ahead of Tuesday's match that Chennai, the first team to lose in the playoff race, is already planning for the upcoming campaign. In order to hone in on their combination and maintain an auction strategy, they targeted the remaining games.

"Need to figure out which individual will do well in which slot next year. Need to work on our bowling. Once we were out of the tournament, we wanted to find the answers for the next year. Need to look into the combination and a couple of players we can pick in the auction," he had said at the time of the toss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Aakash Chopra, a former cricket player for India, boldly told Chennai after the game that they should fire Ravindra Jadeja because their decision to promote him up the order in the previous few games was considered illogical. He told ESPNCricinfo that he believed Dewald Brevis was more appropriate at number four.

Additionally, Chopra believed that Chennai needs to let go of the New Zealand pair of Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway in favor of searching for a more potent batsman in the mini-auction that will take place later this year for the 2026 IPL season.

“I’ve got a long list actually. I would release [R] Ashwin, [Ravindra] Jadeja, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi,”

"I would say probably trade him (Jadeja). You have Dewald Brevis as your No.4. Bat him at No.4. This is a stop-gap arrangement with Devon Conway and Ayush Mhatre, and Urvil Patel at 3. There is a mini auction in between, if you are releasing Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, it's common sense that you will find somebody who can be an absolute banker and destructor at the top," Chopra said on ESPNCricinfo.

"Why would you want Ruturaj Gaikwad to bat with somebody who will not go hammer and tongs? Have Urvil Patel at 3, rather than have one more guy. Either get a finisher or a top-order overseas batter, with Dewald Brevis apart from Noor Ahmad and Matheesha Pathirana. Sam Curran at 3 and Jadeja at 4 won't make sense,” he added.

With just 280 runs in 13 games, including two fifties, and just eight wickets at an average of 38.38, Jadeja has failed to make an impact this season.

CSK will play their last match in IPL 2025 against the Gujarat Titans on May 25 in Ahmedabad.
