In a big development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to extend the allotted extra time for each Indian Premier League (IPL) match by an hour.
This playing conditions will come into effect from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) match, scheduled for May 20 in Delhi.
The allotted amount of extra time given to each game will be increased to 120 minutes in light of the rain threats and the revised schedule which includes both the league matches and the playoff fixtures as well.
“Previously, the Match Playing Conditions stipulated that for league matches, a period of 60 minutes of extra time was available to commence the match in the event of a delay. In playoff matches, this time was extended to 120 minutes. In light of the current threat of rain and the revised schedule, the IPL Governing Council has decided that effective May 20, 2025, all IPL matches (including league matches) will have a period of 120 minutes of extra time to commence the match," the BCCI said to the franchises.
It further stated, “As you are aware, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has commenced after a brief hiatus. Due to the hiatus, the IPL will conclude on June 3, 2025. With the early onset of the monsoon and the extended IPL period, several matches are at risk of being affected by rain. Consequently, the IPL governing council has made adjustments to the Match Playing Conditions."
The board further went on to add, “Accordingly, Clause 13.7.3 of the IPL Conditions stands suitably modified for IPL 2025 only."
Earlier, 120 minutes of extra time was only reserved for playoffs and not the league matches.
Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur and Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the four playoff matches of IPL 2025.
The first qualifier and eliminator match will take place in Mullanpur on May 29 and 30, respectively, whereas the second qualifier and final will be played in Ahmedabad on June 1 and 3, respectively.
Meanwhile, the race for playoffs is heating up. Three teams, namely Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans have already confirmed their qualification while Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians are in a neck-and-neck battle for the fourth and final spot for the knockout stages.
