Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi has been fined 50 percent of his match fees and handed one-match suspension following his third Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Ekana Cricket Stadium on Monday (May 19).
SRH opener Abhishek Sharma has also been reprimanded, being docked 25 percent of his match fees along with one demerit point for what was his first offence.
Rathi has aggregated five demerit points this season, which led to an automatic one-match suspension. Consequently, he will miss LSG's next fixture against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 22.
The latest episode resulted in two demerit points, adding to his tally of three points from earlier breaches.
His previous violations included one demerit point against Punjab Kings on April 1 and two points against Mumbai Indians on April 4.
"Digvesh Singh, Bowler, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)," the IPL release stated.
"This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated Two Demerit Points, in addition to Three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and Two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025.
"As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad."
For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," it further stated.
Coming to Digvesh-Abhishek spat, the incident unfolded in the eighth over of the chase. The wrist-spinner produced his usual notebook celebration after dismissing the SRH batter, who had scored 59 off 20 balls.
The fiery response from Rathi was not received well by Sharma, who reacted angrily, hurling insults at the LSG bowler and igniting a heated confrontation. Umpires and teammates quickly intervened to end the altercation.
However, the tensions didn’t end there. During the post-match handshake, Abhishek was approached by LSG’s assistant coach Vijay Dahiya, who had a brief conversation with the Indian batter before he shook hands with Rathi.
Later, BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla acted as a mediator, engaging in discussions with both Abhishek and Rathi after the match.
After his match-winning innings, Abhishek Sharma addressed the on-field spat with Digvesh Rathi, stating that both players had talked it out afterward and everything was fine.
"I spoke to him after the game, and it is all good now," Abhishek said at the post-match presentation, referring to his altercation with Digvesh.
