Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Axar Patel has urged his bowlers to step up after his team's humiliating defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2025 on Sunday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Delhi Capitals have lost their plot after winning five straight games to start the season, and it now appears they have little chance of making the playoffs.
Axar Patel also hailed his opponents for their batting performance and added that the ball was coming nicely onto the bat in the second innings.
"Fielding and bowling in the powerplay need to improve. The way they batted was excellent. The wicket also improved as the game went on," Axar said at the post-match chat with official broadcasters.
The Delhi Capitals (DC) were led by KL Rahul, who scored an incredible 112* in 65 balls with four sixes and fourteen fours. He became the first batsman to score hundreds for three separate IPL clubs with this, his fifth IPL century. Tristan Stubbs hit 21* in 10 balls as Abishek Porel (30) and Axar Patel (25) assisted DC in posting 199/3 in 20 overs.
As Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill smashed the DC bowlers to every corner of the Arun Jaitley Stadium, GT easily reached the total in reply. Gill scored 93* with three fours and seven sixes, while Sudarsan scored 108* with 12 fours and four sixes to reach his second IPL century.
GT won the game by 10 wickets and qualified for the playoffs. Thanks to their win, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru also qualified for the final four, with only one spot remaining now.
"We felt we had a par score. Got a good finish, KL (Rahul) batted well. Our bowlers tried hard but could not get the win. The way we batted was positive, given the last couple of games. The ball came on nicely in the second innings. It didn’t stick in the pitch like it did in the first innings. They didn’t lose wickets, which made it easier as well," said Axar.
DC is in fifth spot, with six wins and five losses, and has 13 points. One of their matches ended in a no-result.
