The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will resume on May 17 after the tournament was suspended due to India-Pakistan tensions at the border last week.
However, some of the overseas players are unwilling to return to India for the remaining matches despite the ceasefire announcement. Several overseas stars will also have calendar conflicts as a result of the revised schedule.
Hence, the BCCI on Wednesday (May 14) modified the replacement player rules to help the franchises create a strong overseas players pool in case of withdrawals.
A day later, Punjab Kings (PBKS), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (GT) announced player replacements.
PBKS have picked Kyle Jamieson as a replacement for Lockie Ferguson, who is ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The Kiwi pacer will join PBKS for INR 2 Crore.
GT have named Kusal Mendis as a replacement for Jos Buttler, who is set to leave for national duties on May 26, following the team’s last league-stage game against Chennai Super Kings on May 25. The replacement will be effective from May 26, 2025. Mendis will link up with GT for INR 75 Lakh.
LSG have signed New Zealand fast bowler William O’Rourke as a replacement for Mayank Yadav, who sustained a back injury and is ruled out for the remainder of the season. O'Rourke has been bought at a reserve price of INR 3 crore.
Qualifier 1 and Eliminator of the IPL 2025 season will be played on May 29 and 30, respectively, while Qualifier 2 will go ahead on June 1. The final will be played on June 3. The venues for playoffs will be announced in due course.
