After becoming the youngest cricket player to ever reach a T20 and IPL century, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has gained international attention. The 14-year-old Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter became the fastest Indian to reach the 100-run mark in IPL history by smashing seven fours and eleven sixes against the Gujarat Titans' elite pace attack.
Although Ravi Shastri admires Suryavanshi's strategy, he is interested in how the teenager would respond to failure since opponents will now put him to the test even more because he has put himself in their crosshairs following an incredible hundred.
“I think the first shot he ever played (against Lucknow Super Giants), that would have taken everyone’s breath away. But he’s young, just let him play. I would say just let him play a bit because it’s at that age, there’s bound to be failure as well. It’s how he handles failure, as people will come up with new things," Shastri said on The ICC Review.
Shastri, who is a former India captain and head coach, further stated that Suryavanshi should be ready to face a lot of bouncers and short balls, as bowlers have not seen him smack anything full over the boundary ropes.
“There’ll be lots of short stuff thrown at him the next time he comes out to bat because when you tonk someone’s first ball for six, then you show no mercy. Then you don’t care whether he’s 14 years old or 12 years old or 20 years old. The menu is the same as that you dish out. So, he’ll have to get used to that, and once we see him handling that, then you can make a proper judgement," he added.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi will be in action when RR host Mumbai Indians on May 1 in Jaipur.
