Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi took the IPL by storm as he became the youngest-ever centurion in the league’s history on Monday (April 28).
The 14-year-old raced to his maiden IPL ton in just 35 balls, paving the way for RR’s eight-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in the chase of 210. The southpaw eventually scored 101 off 38 deliveries before being dismissed by Prasidh Krishna.
Suryavanshi’s whirlwind knock was studded with seven boundaries and 11 sixes as his fireworks left the spectators at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in awe.
Legendary cricketers such as Shaun Pollock and Adam Gilchrist were also left mesmerized by the innings, with the former labelling it as the "greatest performance" in IPL history.
"For me, this is the greatest individual performance in the IPL, ever. It's got to be. For a 14-year-old to go out there and smash around and get a hundred off 35 balls, that has to be the greatest performance in IPL history," said Pollock while speaking on Cricbuzz Live.
"I thought corporate punishments for kids were done and dusted. He has come out as a schoolboy and given them some corporate punishment," he added.
During the course of his whirlwind knock, Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke Yusuf Pathan's 15-year-old record for the fastest IPL hundred by an Indian. His ton was the second fastest in the tournament history after Chris Gayle's century in 30 balls for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013.
Suryavanshi put on 166 runs for the opening wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained unbeaten on 70 off 40 balls to take RR over the line with 25 deliveries to spare.
Gilchrist was particularly impressed with Suryavanshi's strokeplay, shot-selection and range of shots.
"I was really impressed with the calmness and shot-selection. He goes aggressively on the leg-side, that's a big strength of his. But by the end of the innings, I was impressed that he has a greater array of shots than just a slog over mid-wicket," Gilchrist said.
"To the spinners, getting down and getting creative to low-down lap over backward square-leg. To the quicks, he opened up a bit of an off-side game and held position. That told me he had settled into a rhythm, which allowed his natural game to come through," the Australian great further remarked.
With this victory, Rajasthan Royals kept their playoffs hopes alive, as they notched up their third win of the season. Gujarat Titans suffered their third defeat of IPL 2025, and slipped to third spot in the team standings.
