Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their listless display in the ongoing IPL 2025 as they suffered an 11-run defeat against Royals Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday (April 24).
Chasing 206 to win, the inaugural IPL champions were cruising at 188/5 with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel batting on 47 off just 32 balls.
However, Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal turned the game on its head in the last two overs, helping RCB restrict RR to 194/9.
This was Royals’ fifth defeat in a row, and they are now virtually out of the playoffs race with seven defeats in nine outings.
Meanwhile, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticized RR’s batting approach in the tournament so far, calling it "quite baffling" with someone like Rahul Dravid at helm.
“With Rajasthan Royals, I’m actually talking about the earlier matches where I wasn’t at the ground—I just saw them. So, you're not always able to get the feeling of what’s really happening. But here, I was at the ground, and you could actually see the kind of cricket that was being played. And with someone like Rahul Dravid as the coach, it was quite baffling—it was unthinking cricket. Dravid was always so precise in his thinking, and I would’ve thought that kind of approach would’ve seeped into some of the Rajasthan batters," Gavaskar said in a chat with the broadcaster after the match.
"Where is the thought process there? You can’t expect inexperienced players to always get it right, but still... it’s just a different kind of cricket,” he added.
Despite Dravid rejoining RR as head coach after his successful India stint, their first season back together has not gone to plan at all.
From their disappointing Super Over loss to Delhi Capitals, followed by another 2-run defeat in the final over against Lucknow Super Giants, RR's loss to RCB—with 18 runs left to chase in the last two over—has highlighted a recurring issue through their underwhelming campaign.
RR currently sit in 8th place on the IPL 2025 points table. They have five league matches left to finish the season on a high.
