Star Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has been severely mocked online after sacrificing his wicket against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in a recent IPL 2025 encounter, despite not being out, with supporters citing his recent relationship with the five-time champions.
Instead of putting pressure on the Mumbai spinners, Hyderabad produced a poor batting performance, which was exacerbated by Ishan's risky choice to step back despite not having edged one behind the stumps.
On-field umpire Vinod Seshan was about to signal wide when Kishan walked back, so he raised his finger in an instant. Kishan's judgment astonished everyone, as replays revealed there was no edge involved in the event.
MCC's Law 31.7 states - "An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batter, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal a Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batter."
"A batter may be recalled at any time up to the instant when the ball comes into play for the next delivery, unless it is the final wicket of the innings, in which case it should be up to the instant when the umpires leave the field."
As a result, if the umpire was confident that there was no edge involved, he may have called Kishan back. However, he chose to give him out after considering the batter's actions and body language.
As soon as it was revealed that Kishan hadn’t edged the ball to the keeper thanks to the ultra-edge, social media was abuzz with netizens making fun of Ishan Kishan for giving away his wicket for free.
