Former India pacer Munaf Patel, who is serving Delhi Capitals (DC) as the bowling coach, has been penalized for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday (April 16).
Apart from losing 25 per cent of his match fees, Munaf has also accumulated one demerit point.
"Munaf Patel admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 - which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game - and accepted the Match Referee's sanction," the IPL said in a statement on Thursday.
"For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," it added.
The incident unfolded during RR’s chase when the fourth umpire reportedly stopped Delhi's reserve player from entering the field to convey Patel's message in the middle.
The 2011 World Cup-winner was seen having an argument with the umpire while tying up his laces near the boundary line. The video of this episode went viral on social media.
Coming to the match, Delhi Capitals edged past Rajasthan Royals in what was the first Super Over of this year’s IPL. RR tied with DC’s first innings score of 188, resulting in the match going into the one-over eliminator.
Mitchell Starc delivered a phenomenal last over for the Capitals when the Royals needed nine runs to win. The left-arm quick used all his experience bowling against Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel and managed to push the game into the Super Over, conceding just eight runs.
After returning with the figures of 1/36 in four overs, Starc gave away 11 runs in the Super Over against Hetmyer and Riyan Parag.
In the end, DC won the game rather easily, achieving the 12-run target in just four balls with KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs completing the task against Sandeep Sharma's bowling.
