The 16th match of the IPL 2025 saw Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hosting Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 4, 2025. MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl first. Rohit Sharma missed the match due to injury.
On the other hand, Akash Deep played his first match for LSG in this IPL 2025, returning from his back injury after 3 months.
Mitchell Marsh gave the perfect start to LSG, smashing 60 in 31 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes. LSG scored 76 runs in 7 overs. Then, Aiden Markram held one end, scoring 53 in 38 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes. Rishabh Pant’s poor IPL continued as he got out for 2 runs.
Ayush Badoni (30) and David Miller (27) pushed the LSG total to 203/8 in 20 overs. For MI, Hardik Pandya picked 5/36 and became the first captain in IPL to take a five-wicket haul.
In response, MI lost the openers Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks for cheap. Naman Dhir (46) and Suryakumar Yadav (67) tried to bring MI back into the game. However, their dismissals got LSG breathing easy again.
Then, in a contentious moment, Tilak Varma, who struggled for 25 in 23 balls, retired out, and MI sent in Mitchell Santner for big hits in the presence of Hardik Pandya.
Pandya tried his best, scoring 28* in 16 with 2 fours and 1 six, but MI finished on 191/5. LSG won the game by 12 runs and moved to sixth spot in the points table.
While LSG winning the game got them praises from the cricket fraternity, the Tilak Varma retired out incident became the focal point. Cricket experts shared their views on the matter, while praising LSG’s win.
