Jasprit Bumrah’s absence was felt in the Mumbai Indians (MI) playing XI as they opened their IPL 2025 campaign with a four-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 23.
Bumrah has been out of competitive action since the fifth BGT Test against Australia in Sydney, where he sustained a lower back injury. The fast bowler didn’t feature in India’s triumphant Champions Trophy 2025 campaign as he failed to recover in time.
Ahead of MI’s second match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Saturday (March 29), head coach Mahela Jayawardene addressed the query on Bumrah’s recovery, revealing that the right-arm quick is still recuperating from his back injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
"Everyone is available except for Bumrah. Like I said in my last interview as well, it's on a daily basis that he's going through his programme," Jayawardene told the media on the eve of the game.
Earlier, it was reported that Bumrah will miss the initial few matches of the IPL 2025 season and Jayawardene refused to give specific timeline for his return.
"So far, everything seems okay. But there were no timelines given by NCA, so we'll wait on that," he added.
Jayawardene also spoke about the high-scoring trend in IPL 2025 but remained confident in MI’s experienced bowling attack.
"We've got a very experienced bowling attack, and they don't think like that. Each venue and opposition presents different challenges, and that’s something we will focus on," he explained.
Moreover, Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that Arjun Tendulkar, who was recovering from a brief illness, will be considered for selection if required.
