MS Dhoni has downplayed his IPL wicketkeeping achievements and highlighted why it is critical for him to stay behind the wickets when on the field. He talked about his keeping skills in the last IPL season.
Dhoni has continued to defy his age and produce credible performances behind the stumps for the Chennai Super Kings in the latter few seasons of the IPL, particularly after retiring from international cricket.
Dhoni delivered a fantastic stumping in the CSK vs MI game on Sunday, March 23, demonstrating that at the age of 43, he is one of the greatest in the profession.
While speaking on the MS Dhoni Experience on JioHotstar, Dhoni was shown a highlight from last season in which the CSK veteran made a diving grab to his right against GT. The catch was heavily touted by commentators and fans, but Dhoni believed it was a fluke.
The former Indian captain remarked that his plunge was like a sack falling from a truck. Dhoni then stated that he is a safe wicketkeeper who does not attempt showy one-handed stunners.
"It's a fluke. If you closely monitor it, it feels like a sack of rice falling from the back of a truck. The whole thing is if we can reach with two hands, I've always been a fan of trying to take catches with two hands, and it helps. So, it always feels good if you can contribute like this. But I'm not somebody who you would see dive around a lot or to take those, you know, great catches, one-handed great catches. I'm quite a safe keeper. I like to keep it that," said Dhoni.
Dhoni went on to remark that if he is not the wicketkeeper for his team, he feels useless. The CSK great remarked that being behind the stumps allows him to properly assess the game and the conditions, as well as provide comments to his captain.
"It's a challenge, you know, and that's what makes it interesting and also the fact that if I'm not wicketkeeping, I think I'm useless on the field. Because that's where I read the game in the best possible manner. I have to be really close to the game, for the angles, to see how the bowler is bowling, and how the wicket is behaving. What is the change.
In the first six overs with the new ball, the wicket behaves differently. After that, has it changed or it remains the same, all these things, when I'm right behind the stump, I'm in a better position to judge what really is happening and then to convey to the captain as to this is what is happening, whether it's a bad delivery that has gone for a 6 or it's a good delivery that the batsman has hit for a 6. I can differentiate between the two when I'm behind the stumps," said Dhoni.
Dhoni was lauded for his stumping of Suryakumar Yadav, which had a reaction time of 0.12 seconds only. He will next be in action for CSK during the clash against RCB on March 28.
