All eyes are on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as all the IPL franchises will announced their list of retained players for the 2025 season on Thursday (October 31).
Over the years, CSK have prioritised stability, consistently retaining marquee players to maintain a strong squad identity. However, rumours are rife that their core might get disturbed this time around.
With the legendary MS Dhoni approaching the end of his IPL career, the five-time champions are reportedly considering a new face to take the team forward.
According to a report published in The Indian Express, star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, currently associated with Delhi Capitals (DC), is among CSK’s targets for the upcoming mega auction.
Pant is seen as an ideal successor to Dhoni at CSK. The 27-year-old will reportedly be released by the Capitals due to differences over captaincy.
If Pant goes into the auction pool, the Super Kings are expected to break their bank, possibly exceeding INR 20 crore.
However, this move involves strategic challenges, particularly regarding CSK's retention and release decisions.
CSK's retention list is likely to be headlined by Dhoni himself, potentially as an uncapped player. The franchise will reportedly keep hold of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and emerging fast-bowler Matheesha Pathirana. The three retentions could then allow CSK a significant cash reserve to splurge on Pant.
While Ravindra Jadeja has been a constant feature in the CSK squad for over a decade, recent limitations in his T20 batting have raised questions about his future.
As per the report, the franchise is exploring the possibility of releasing him into the auction pool and then using a Right to Match (RTM) card to repurchase him.
With this tactic, CSK could re-sign Jadeja at a reduced cost and also free up funds to participate in the likely bidding war for Pant.
Nonetheless, loyalty and emotional ties remain big factors with Jadeja. CSK are ready to retain him right away if the RTM strategy proves unfeasible, and Dhoni is likely involved in the negotiations.
The franchise wants to secure its future with a dynamic leader, and if they manage to rope in Rishabh Pant, it would mark a monumental shift.
