WATCH- Ricky Ponting hints joining an IPL franchise for IPL 2025; KKR reportedly front-runners

KKR is on a lookout for a new mentor after Gautam Gambhir became India head coach | XRicky Ponting, Australia legend, had parted ways with Delhi Capitals (DC) recently after being their head coach for seven years. He was also reportedly one of the candidates for the Indian team head coach job.

Ponting, Australia's two-time World Cup-winning captain, joined DC in 2018, and while the team reached its first final in 2021, subsequent performance fell short of expectations. Despite his lack of success as an IPL coach, Ponting must be on the radar of many franchises right now.

However, as the IPL 2025 time is getting closer, rumors have begun to circulate that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Ricky Ponting are very close to inking a deal. KKR is looking for a new mentor for the franchise, after Gautam Gambhir signed on to become Team India's head coach, after leading the team to IPL 2024 title.

In a recent interaction, Ponting too showed his keen interest in continuing his IPL run, though with a different franchise this time.

"There might be a few opportunities coming up in IPL in the next few weeks, and we'll see what happens," Ponting told on Sky Sports.

Ponting is still interested in taking on coaching chances in the IPL following his departure from DC. Ponting, who resigned from his position as head coach of the Delhi Capitals following a seven-year tenure, admitted that a lack of silverware led to his departure from the IPL team, but he wants to compete again.

"I'd love to coach again in the IPL. I've had a great time every year that I've been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there. I've had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn't really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted.

Me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn't happen,” Ponting had said on ICC Review.
