Delhi Capitals hesitant to appoint Sourav Ganguly as head coach despite former India skipper showing interest: Report

DC parted ways with long-serving head coach Ricky Ponting last week.

Sourav Ganguly | GettyIndian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) are not considering former India skipper Sourav Ganguly for the head coach role after their decision to part ways with the Australian legend Ricky Ponting.

Ganguly may have expressed interest but the DC management is hesitant to give him dual responsibilities as both the Director of Cricket and head coach, News18 reported.

According to the report, the franchise is on the lookout for candidates like Gautam Gambhir, known for effective mentorship and coaching.

"Ganguly already has a lot of things on his plate – planning multiple things for the franchise as the Director of Cricket," News18 quoted a source as saying.

"The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It’s no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor. He keeps track of players – both international and domestic," the source added.

The discussions over appointing a new head coach stem from a desire for stability, considering that the mega-auction is due to be held before the IPL 2025 season.

"The management doesn’t want a stop-gap arrangement for the head coach position as it’s the season right after the mega auction as the new cycle gets underway," the source stated.

Furthermore, the report claims that the Delhi Capitals are in contact with two former World Cup-winning cricketers regarding the head coach role.

Ricky Ponting was associated with the Capitals since 2018. DC reached the knockouts thrice in seven seasons under his guidance but failed to lift their maiden IPL title. They exited the playoffs in 2019 and 2021, and finished runners-up in 2020.
