IPL franchises at loggerheads over number of retentions ahead of IPL 2025 auction; BCCI to take a final call soon: Report

The mega auction for the IPL 2025 season will take place later this year.

The mega auction is set to take place ahead of next year's IPL | BCCI-IPLThe auction for the IPL 2025 season will take place later this year. It will be a grand auction and the BCCI has already initiated the process of finalizing the retention policy.

While franchises continue to be at loggerheads at each other, majority have asked for more retentions compared to the last allowance.

During the last mega auction in 2022, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of four players, with the proviso that no more than three could be Indian and no more than two could be overseas players.

It can be expected that the BCCI will take a final call after a meeting of the owners later this month, Cricbuzz reported.

According to the report, BCCI Acting CEO and IPL in-charge Hemang Amin have consulted the CEOs of the franchises to gather their views on the policy and salary cap for the next three years. Opinions were also sought on the possible inclusion of Right To Match (RTM) cards, which were not used in 2021

The report further claims that majority of the teams have requested for retention of 5-7 players, while a franchisee went on to request retention of 8 players. On the other hand, there are franchises that don’t want to retain a single player.

Moreover, there was a request to have only RTMs and no retentions allowed. Notably, Right To Match cards used to enable teams to match the highest bid for the player that played for them in the previous season and secure his services again.

As the report, the BCCI officials also consulted the franchise CEOs about the player purse and opinions have varied. The unanimous opinion is that the salary cap could range between Rs 110-120 crore but an increase of Rs 20 crore cannot be ruled out. The salary cap currently stands at Rs 100 crore.

In addition, the discussions also included the cricketing matters, especially the much-talked-about Impact Player rule. The media rights holders are reportedly satisfied with it, while the feedback from the cricketers and coaching staff are not positive. However, the BCCI is likely to stick with the Impact Player rule for now.
