Riding on left-arm spinners Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma’s remarkable spells, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) registered a comprehensive 36-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2024 at Chepauk on Friday (May 24).
Shahbaz claimed three wickets for 23 runs in four overs while Abhishek returned with figures of 2/24 in his full quota as SRH restricted RR to 139/7 in the chase of 176.
With this victory, SRH entered into the IPL final for the first time in six years. The Pat Cummins-led side will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the title clash at Chepauk on Sunday (May 26).
During the course of RR’s collapse, SRH co-owner Kavya Maran couldn't control her emotions as she was out of her seat clapping and cheering.
With 42 needed off the final over, Kavya ran up the stairs and hugged her father before celebrating with other members present in the SRH stand. She was also spotted dancing once the victory was eventually sealed.
This will be SRH's third appearance in the final. The only time they had clinched the trophy was in 2016, under another Australian man David Warner.
"The boys have been fantastic all season. There's a great vibe in the squad as you can see and the final was the goal at the start of the season and we made it. It is for the whole franchise, probably 60 or 70 of them who put their heart and soul into this. It is really gratifying and hopefully one more left," SRH skipper Pat Cummins said at the post-match presentation.
