Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir took a dig at Kevin Pietersen’s captaincy during a conversation in which he was defending Hardik Pandya. Hardik Pandya captained the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2024 but struggled with the leadership.
Gambhir provided the ideal opportunity by lambasting Pietersen and AB de Villiers for criticizing Hardik Pandya's captaincy in the IPL 2024. Both legendary cricketers questioned Hardik's leadership after Mumbai India's poor performance in the 17th edition of the event.
However, Gambhir retaliated on Pietersen and de Villiers, claiming that both had nothing to offer as leaders.
“When they themselves did captaincy [were captains], what were their own performances like? I do not think that whether it is Kevin Pietersen or AB de Villiers, there have ever been performances in their careers from a leadership point of view. Nothing. If you look up their records, I think it's worse than any other leader,” Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.
This opinion of Gautam Gambhir on AB de Villiers and Kevin Pietersen’s captaincy went viral on social media. Later in the day, Pietersen took note of that and decided to drop in a comment.
The former England captain was very positive in the way he took Gambhir’s comments on his leadership. Pietersen agreed with Gambhir and added a few laughing emojis to see the lighter side of things.
"He’s not wrong. I was a terrible captain!!!,” Pietersen wrote on X tagging Gambhir.
