The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hosted Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 12, at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in the 61st match of the IPL 2024. This match was important for CSK to remain alive in the race for playoffs, while a win here for RR will book their spot in the playoffs.
Sanju Samson won the toss and chose that RR would bat first. However, on a tricky pitch, the RR batters failed to find a rhythm against disciplined CSK bowling.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) and Jos Buttler (21) gave a solid start of 43 in 6.2 overs. But it was Riyan Parag (47* with one four and 3 sixes) and Dhruv Jurel (28 in 18 balls) that helped RR to 141/5 in 20 overs. The last overs push never came from the RR batters and they fell short of the par total of 160-165.
For CSK, Simarjeet Singh picked 3/26, while Tushar Deshpande took two wickets.
Rachin Ravindra gave a quick start with 27 in 18, while Ruturaj Gaikwad shouldered the innings as the captain. Daryl Mitchell (22), Moeen Ali (10), and Shivam Dube (18) all fell after getting started.
Ravindra Jadeja then joined Gaikwad in the middle but was dismissed controversially for 5 runs.
The incident happened on the 5th ball of the 16th over, bowled by Avesh Khan. Jadeja directed the ball to the third man and was on his way for a second run when Gaikwad refused and sent him back. Jadeja was in mid-pitch when Sanju Samson collected the throw and as Jadeja kept an eye on Samson and turned back, Sanju threw the ball.
Jadeja was on his way back to the crease when Sanju’s throw hit him on the body and Samson straightaway appealed to the umpire. The decision went upstairs and the TV umpire concluded that Jadeja knew where the ball was and turned in the line of the throw. He was given out on the big screen.
Jadeja had a brief chat with umpires before walking off the field in angst.
