MS Dhoni was given a huge reception by the crowd at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala when he came out to bat in the ongoing Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) IPL 2024 match on May 5.

Punjab Kings captain Sam Curran won the toss and decided to bowl first. PBKS played with the same team, while CSK substituted Mitchell Santner for Mustafizur Rahman, who returned to international service.

Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 9 runs, giving CSK a poor start. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (32) and Daryl Mitchell (30) scored 57 runs to the third wicket. However, Ruturaj was bowled out for 69 by Rahul Chahar, who also dismissed the dangerous Shivam Dube on the following delivery.

Ravindra Jadeja (47), Moeen Ali, and Shardul Thakur (17 each) attempted to propel the Chennai Super Kings to a decent score. However, after they fell, the onus fell on veteran MS Dhoni to give a proper finish to the innings.

MS Dhoni had been in very good hitting form and had a strike rate of 230 coming into this match. However, for the MS Dhoni fans, it proved to be an anti climax.

Harshal Patel had just clean-bowled Shardul Thakur with a brilliant slow yorker and decided to repeat the delivery to MS Dhoni as well.

Dhoni was too early in playing his shot as Patel’s slow yorker made the ball dip as it reached Dhoni snuck under his bat and disturbed the timber. MS Dhoni was out for a first-ball duck and this left the fans of the thala shocked.

CSK managed to put 167/9 in 20 overs.
