Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered a comprehensive 24-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 51 of the IPL 2024 season at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday (May 3).
With this victory, KKR increased their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. It was their seventh win in 10 games this season.
The biggest positive for KKR in the win over MI was star pacer Mitchell Starc’s return to form. The left-arm quick returned with the figures of 4/33 in 3.5 overs to help his team defend the total of 169.
After the game, Starc addressed a press conference, where the Australian international had a very short response to questions regarding the pressure on him because of whopping price tag.
Starc was signed by KKR for a hefty sum of INR 24.75 Crore at the IPL auction last December, making him the most expensive buy in league’s history.
“I didn’t set my price tag, so it is what it is. I haven’t thought too much about it,” Starc said.
The 34-year-old is focused on putting in performances for KKR and is keen to help them get a third IPL title. He is also using the time to prepare himself for the upcoming T20 World Cup for which he has been picked in the Australian squad.
“It’s T20 cricket, it’s not as demanding as Test match cricket. Physically (it is) not a problem and (it is a) fantastic lead-in to play here in the best T20 league in the world,” Starc said.
“You’re playing some high-quality cricket leading into the World Cup, a lot of players at this tournament are going to be at the World Cup. In that regard, it’s a great thing to see and test your skills,” he added.
England’s T20 World Cup-bound players, who are playing in the ongoing IPL, will leave the tournament ahead of the playoffs. The Australian players might also follow suit.
Starc understands this but he is currently focusing on KKR’s next match against Lucknow Super Giants.
“In terms of length of time, that’s part and parcel of international cricket. My main focus is in two days time play in Lucknow, the World Cup is next month. At this moment, it’s (about) trying to help KKR win the tournament,” he concluded.
