IPL 2024: WATCH- Tim David, Mark Boucher urge Suryakumar to take DRS for wide from dugout; umpire ignores Sam Curran’s protest

MI defeated PBKS by 9 runs in a thrilling encounter in Mullanpur.

The controversy of Surya asking for wide after prompts from MI dugout | XIn what can be called a controversial call, the Mumbai Indians (MI) dugout was seen signaling Suryakumar Yadav to take a DRS for a wide after watching a replay in their recent IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings on April 18.

MI was asked to bat first by PBKS stand-in captain Sam Curran and after Rohit Sharma got out for 36, Suryakumar Yadav took command, scoring 78 runs, and with Tilak Varma making 34*, took MI to 192/7 in 20 overs.

However, in a viral video, during the 15th over MI batting, head coach Mark Boucher and batter Tim David are seen gesturing to Suryakumar Yadav to review a wide call from the dugout. A section of fans claimed that Suryakumar Yadav reviewed a call from the on-field umpire only after he saw the signals from the dugout.

This happened when Arshdeep was bowling the 15th over. He bowled a ball away from the batter's arc, and umpire Vineet Kulkarni did not call it wide, despite hitter Suryakumar's trigger movement toward the ball.

Suryakumdoes does not check the call immediately after it was made, but a couple of seconds later, umpire Vineet can be seen delivering the verdict upstairs.

The PBKS captain Sam Curran is seen arguing with the umpire when he sent the decision upstairs to review. Curran seems to be pointing toward the MI dug-out, apparently saying that the input came from outside the field.

The decision was eventually overturned with third umpire Nitin Menon giving it a wide as the marginal call favored MI.
