IPL 2024: “Unless someone takes double hat-trick,” Shubman Gill’s cheeky remark on defending 89 after GT’s big loss to DC

GT’s innings folded for a paltry 89 in 17.3 overs against DC.

Shubman Gill | BCCI-IPLGujarat Titans (GT) suffered a crushing six-wicket defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 32 of the IPL 2024 season at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (April 17).

Asked to bat first, GT’s innings folded for a paltry 89 in 17.3 overs. It was a listless batting display as no one managed to touch the 40-run mark. Rashid Khan was the top scorer with 31 off 24 balls.

Chasing the target, DC completed the formality in just 8.5 overs to register their third win and give their run rate a boost.

After the game, the Titans skipper Shubman Gill admitted that defending such small totals was next to impossible.

While GT bowlers did manage to pick up four wickets in the second innings, Gill cheekily said a double hat-trick was needed for the miracle win to happen.

"When the opposition is chasing 89, unless someone takes a double hat-trick, you cannot win," Gill said in the post-match interaction.

Only three Gujarat batters reached the double-digit mark, but Shubman Gill refused to blame the pitch and conditions.

"Our batting was very average. Need to move on from this game and come back with the same mindset before the next game. The wicket was alright. If you see our dismissals - me, Saha and Sai - it had nothing to do with the pitch," he remarked.

With this defeat, Gujarat Titans slumped to the seventh spot in the team standings. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals moved to the sixth spot in the 10-team points table

Gujarat Titans will next face Punjab Kings in Chandigarh on Sunday (April 21).
