BCCI calls meeting of IPL team owners on April 16, likely to discuss mega auction and retentions: Report

Invitations for the meeting have been extended to all 10 owners of the IPL franchises.

The mega auction is set to take place ahead of next year's IPL | BCCI-IPLThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to hold a meeting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners on April 16.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Gujarat Titans will be facing Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

According to a report published in Cricbuzz, invitations have been extended to all 10 owners of the IPL franchises.

BCCI president Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, and IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal are due to attend the meeting. The communication regarding the meeting is believed to have been sent by IPL CEO Hemang Amin.

The report claimed that the BCCI will address several policy decisions at the meeting, mainly related to the mega-auction ahead of next year’s IPL.

"They will discuss the way forward for the IPL," a source familiar with the matter quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

As expected, the number of retentions before the auction will be a major topic of discussion. While there is no mutual agreement on the number, the Indian board is believed to be seeking to negotiate a solution.

As per the report, a section of IPL franchise owners wants the number of retentions to be increased, emphasizing that teams have established themselves and need continuity to strengthen their brand and fan base.

During the last mega-auction in 2022, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of four players and some owners now wants the number of retentions to be as high as eight.

On the other hand, another group is not in favour of such high number of retentions. Moreover, there is discussion about reintroducing the Right to Match card, which used to enable teams to match the highest bid for the player that played for them in the previous season and secure his services again.

Among the list of agendas in the meeting, salary cap will be one of them. During the last mini-auction, the cap was set at INR 100 crore, but it is likely to soar, considering the huge uplift in the teams' central revenue share following the BCCI's signing of a hefty INR 48,390 crore broadcast deal two years ago.
