Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni elaborated why he doesn't give animated reactions to drop catches in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches anymore.
On the eve of the IPL 2024 opener, Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain, handing over the leadership baton to young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Speaking at a promotional event, Dhoni reminded the anchor that he is no longer the leader of the pack when he was asked about his reaction to a drop catch from Rachin Ravindra in CSK’s second match of the ongoing IPL season against the Gujarat Titans at Chepauk on March 26.
Ravindra has impressed one and all while playing for CSK so far, registering scores of 37 (15 balls) and 46 (20 balls) in the first two matches against RCB and GT. However, the southpaw made a rare mistake on Tuesday as he spilled Sai Sudharsan’s catch in the 15th over of GT’s unsuccessful chase of 208.
"When you missed the catch, did you look at MS? How did he react, what did he tell you?" the anchor asked the young Kiwi all-rounder.
"Well, there's a new captain," MS Dhoni intervened.
"It (muscle memory) is there. But, I am not somebody who reacts a lot, especially when somebody is playing his first game or second game. I think Rutu (Ruturaj) is quite the same. But it was fun to watch him (Rachin) move all round the ground," Dhoni added.
Under Gaikwad’s captaincy, the defending champions have won their first two matches so far. While CSK defeated RCB by six wickets, they thrashed GT by 63 runs to move to the top of the points table featuring 10 teams.
Chennai Super Kings will next face Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on Sunday (March 31).
