IPL 2024: “Keep your head up Champ,” Kwena Maphaka receives words of support from Bravo, Pollard after tough IPL debut

Kwena Maphaka | JioCinemaDwayne Bravo and Mumbai Indians (MI) batting coach Kieron Pollard came out in the defence of Kwena Maphaka after the South African teenager was taken to the cleaners by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters in his maiden IPL appearance.

Maphaka, who was the Player of the Tournament in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year, was signed by MI as a replacement for injured Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka.

The 17-year-old left-arm pacer made his IPL debut against SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday (Marc 27) and instantly got a reality check of senior-level cricket.

Maphaka conceded 66 runs in his 4 overs as the Sunrisers ended up scoring 277/3 in 20 overs – the new highest team total in IPL history.

After the tough outing, Kwena Maphaka received words of support from the two former Caribbean all-rounders.

Bravo, the current CSK bowling coach, shared a picture of the bowler on his Instagram account and had a sweet caption for the youngster.

"Keep your head up Champ! Kwena Maphaka I’m sure you will definitely bounce back and don’t let this one off game make you start to doubt yourself,it’s a great challenge for you and you will only get better as the tournament goes on!" wrote Bravo.

On the other hand, Pollard encouraged Maphaka by stating that he had greater things to achieve. The MI batting coach also said while it was a tough day at the office, he loved how the 17-year-old kept going at it.

"Head up young man … greater things to achieve. I’m sure your family, friends loved ones are very proud of you .. tough first day at the office but loved how you kept coming . #greaterthingsinstore # future looks bright. #17yearsyoung we believe in giving youngsters a platform @mumbaiindians," wrote Pollard.

Mumbai Indians have lost their first two matches in the IPL 2024 so far. They are currently languishing at the ninth spot on the points table, featuring 10 teams.

The five-time champions will next face Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (April 1).
